The Dominicans have a long history of begging for their needs. There are many legends of St Dominic who, when there was no food in the priory, would encourage his brothers to pray and food would be provided in some way. So primarily we pray for our needs and benefactors. However, like everyone else we work for our living.

giveWhile we have many talented brothers, the remuneration from the kind of work most of us do is not sufficient to provide for our needs. Working within the official structures of the Church is never profitable. Salaries are really not comparable to what people earn ‘in the world’. Working in institutions like universities or other public entities brings better rewards but still not enough. And to reach that level of competency also involves an enormous amount of money in training.

The Order is always established in a country by brothers being sent there by a founding province. In SA we were established by England and the Netherlands who provided the initial money needed. Over the years those Dominican provinces benefited from the generosity of benefactors who helped them and who left bequests to the Order. These reserves are now drying up both in those provinces as well as in our local reserves.

Each of our houses tries to provide for itself. We barely cope as salaries are really low. Those in formation are not money earners. Those responsible for formation and in leadership positions in the province are generally also not money earners. Our major expenses are formation, medical, transport and new apostolates – like setting up in another country.

We presently have 14 brothers in formation and the annual cost per brother is approximately €7000. The breakdown of this figure can be found Here

Our needs are thus great and we really have only a handful of friends who contribute on a monthly basis with not even enough to cover administrative costs. Some are very generous in providing things like fruit and vegetables. But we need a solid and more reliable foundation of reserves in our own country.
