[Isa 41:13-20 and Matt 11:11-15]

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2015 THURSDAY IN THE SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT [Isaiah 41:13-20 and Matthew 11:11-15] "I am the Lord, your God, who grasp your right hand; It is I who say to you, 'Fear not, I will help you.'" [Isaiah] When the community I lived in several years ago was discerning the election of a new prior and my name came up, I was reluctant to accept the possibility because of my itinerant ministry. One of the brethren simply said, "We will help you." And they did. Those reassuring words and deeds made a big difference. When Moses was reluctant to accept God's call, God's reply was simple: "I will be with you." Through Isaiah we are assured that God has us by the hand. That can be one of the most reassuring gestures of all. Are we willing to accept it? There are times in this season of Advent, due to the stress of the secular "holiday season," that we and many others may wonder how we will get through it. Can we imagine being held by the hand as if we are crossing a very busy street? If we have found the nativity scene we can take a good long look at it and realize that little child, God incarnate, could wrap his fingers around one of ours and hold us by the hand. As the old hymn puts it, "Blessed assurance....!" AMEN
